Event Promo: Dikir Barat Competition, Putrajaya.

Hey. Want to watch Dikir Barat? Or wan to join the competition? :)

Dikir barat is a musical form, native to the Malay Peninsula, that involves singing in groups—often in a competitive setting. Dikir barat may be performed either with percussion instrumental accompaniment, or with no instruments at all. The dance is similar to Endang Dance except with more clappings. The origins of dikir barat are not clear; it is found in both Thailand and Malaysia, and today the Malaysian government actively promotes it as an important part of Malaysian national culture.

Dikir barat is typically performed by groups of ten to fifteen members, though there is no actual set size, even in competitive environments. A group usually sits cross-leggedon a platform, sometimes surrounded by the audience. Where the dikir barat is performed competitively, the two competing groups will both be on the stage at the same time.

In a typical dikir barat performance, the group will perform two segments. The first is led by the tok juara who is often the person in charge of the musical training of the group. This first segment usually contains the more complex musical arrangements, and will likely feature the awok-awok (chorus) singing in unison with the tok juara, as well as responsorial segments of singing, similar to what the tukang karut does with the awok-awok, later in the performance. Though musically more complex than what will follow, the first segment is seen as the "low-key" segment of the performance.

if you are around Putrajaya on 24th May, come and see the Competitition of Dikir Barat which will be held in Presint 9 Field.

P.s: Thecompetition is still open for those interested to join the competition. Pleas contact Encik Sulhie at 0133000035 for more information about the competition.

Kolo Mee - 'A Sarawak Favourite, Any Time Of Day!'

Let’s talk about probably the most well-known signature dish in Sarawak this time: Kolo Mee.

One of the best things about Sarawak is the culinaryawesomeness in Sarawak. Sarawak often lends its own unique twist to traditional Malay, Chinese, Local ethnics and even Indonesian food.

The allure of this dish lies in its simplicity. Kolo Mee is one of the most popular, readily available (locally) wholesome meal for the locals and visitors alike. It is a substitute staple food for rice. Today, Kolo Mee is available in every nook and corner of Sarawak.

This delightful combination of flash-boiled noodles, is served with some crushed garlic and shallots, delightfully minced beef, pork (non-halal) or chicken. To Muslims, please make sure you did not choose the pork Kolo Mee, :'(

Although the springy noodles resemble instant noodles, they are actually egg noodles. Some people might confuse this dish with Wantan Mee, but while the Wantan Mee is drenched in dark soy sauce and served with soup, kolo mee is only lightly drizzled with fish sauce, shallots and a dash of MSG (monosodium glutamate).

Although MSG has a bad name in the community, used in the right quantity it actually enhances the flavour present in the dish. This is one ingredient where using more does not mean it further enhances your dish, however, it may cause adverse side effects.

Due to its widespread popularity, the kolo mee has been a favourite during all times of the day, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner and even supper. This makes it perfect for you to have it anytime of the day.

This mouth-watering delight is a Sarawak original and best-taken piping hot. You have not savoured Sarawak until you have tasted Kolo Mee.

Top 25 Experience #3: Gastronomic Hunt - Jalan Alor, Kuala Lumpur

Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Jalan alor is one of the Malaysia's most popular food haunts.  Relatively quite during the day, the street is transformed into a building outdoor foodcourt when the sun goes down.  Hawkers fire up their woks as hungry customers start piling in, sitting in makeshift tables and chairs lined by the roadside.

Jalan Alor is a unique food destination in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The whole character of the city changes when you step onto the street. Gone are the modern shopping malls that align the city, which are replaced with something of the past age.  It was once known as a red light district and remnants of those activities still exist. However, after several face lifts, the street has literally become a food haven.

Some of the best culinary delights that Malaysia has to offer are not at the swanky overpriced restaurants but right at the sidewalks, in the rows and rows of hawker stalls. On Jalan Alor, these stalls will take up both sides of the road selling food that best represents Malaysia. This is not just a place for the locals but foreigners also frequently visit here to taste the unique dishes that they would most probably not be able to back home.

The best advice for people who wish to visit Jalan Alor is to bring their appetite. As mentioned, there are plenty to choose from here and you wouldn’t be able to try everything in a single trip, so it is important that you make several trips to this street if there is a high possibility that you will not be returning to Jalan Alor for quite a while. Here, you are not just tasting the food here but also the culture in Malaysia. Diversity does not just exist in the population but that very factor that makes Malaysia so special is also translated in its cooking.

The character of the street takes a life of its own and you will definitely be missing out if you do not go there for a visit. Jalan Alor is synonymous with good food, so much that there were much protests when the local authorities renamed the road. Jalan Alor indeed has a lot to offer for local visitors as well as those coming from abroad, so head there and experience it for yourself.
As Jalan Alor is located within the Bukit Bintang area, it can be easily found if you are staying somewhere in the city center. For example, Radium Palace is located 1 minute from the food street, from Capitol Hotel it is a 2 minute walk and 5-star Grand Millennium is only 10 minutes from Jalan Alor. If you are staying outside the city center, you can get to Jalan Alor by metro. Get out at Bukit Bintang Station (right next to Lot10 Shopping Mall). From there it is a 5 minute walk to Jalan Alor.

Regatta Lepa – a boating festival Sabah style

Regatta Lepa is an astounding festival that pays homeage to the Lepa, the traditional single – mast sailing boat of the Bajau of Semporna. During the Regatta Lepa festival, we may witness the crowning of the most beautiful lepa as well as the Lepa Beauty Pageant, plus, enjoying the cultural performances and fireworks.

Semporna in far southeastern Sabah is wellknown for its world class diving sites that lie just off the coast – Sipadan. But the Bajau mainly town comes alive around March to April when the colourful Regatta takes place. Regatta – Borneo festival with traditional, single mast sailing boat.

Semporna itself is a pretty little place with stilt houses sprawled across the bay, which in turn was filled with boating activity, markets and trade. During the Regatta Lepa festival, tents and stalls are set up. It is the perferct time for you if you wish to witness some of the traditions of the region.

unique crafts at the booth selling

Usually, there are also some cultural events taking place on the town field with dancing in traditional dress, music and singing. And there are some traditional wooden hulled lepa boats already sailing around, decorated and ready for the boat parades of the morrow. These single-mast sailing boats of the Bajaus of Semporna give the festival its name and it was exciting to experience by ourselves.

There will be single kayak or group canoe events, an event in which competitors had to climb a pole and try to push each other off, and even a tug of war competition in which boat competitors could use their legs only to row. It was noisy, raucous and thoroughly enjoyable with teams getting resounding cheers when they returned to the docks.

After this the regatta of the boats began with a colourful stream of lepa boats decked out in flags and even dancing women in traditional dress. They smiled, swayed, and moved impossibly long finger-nailed hands around while men behind them beat on gongs, drums and other local instruments.

Top 25 Experiences #1: World's Tallest Twin Towers - Petronas Twin Towers Kuala Lumpur

Do you know the Petronas Twin Towers?

Do you ever visit the towers?

Lets start the blog with top 25 experiences of what to see, do and experience in Malaysia as recommended by Tourism Malaysia in their website here.

Their #1 pick is Petronas Twin Tower, Kuala Lumpur.

It is THE TALLEST TWIN TOWERS IN THE WORLD!!!! Its here! In Malaysia!

About The Towers:
Kuala Lumpur's iconic Petronas Twin Towers were designed by an Argentine and built by Japanese and Korean contractors, but the structures are staunchly rooted in Malaysian culture. The towers borrow from the Islamic tradition, Malaysia's national religion, in their orderly repetition of steel and glass on the buildings' facade; the crowning spires atop hearken back to the minarets that adorn mosques the world over. The towers, which opened in 1998, held the title of world's tallest buildings until the completion of Taipei 101 in 2004. Named for the state-owned gas company Petronas, which inhabits Tower 1, both towers stretch 1,483 ft. (452 m) into the sky. But the towers do not merely stand aside each other; like many of their twinned brethren, a sky bridge connects the two towers halfway up the buildings. But despite their magnificent design, the height is somewhat deceiving. The buildings only have 88 floors, quite paltry given their height. That's because the Petronas Towers' listed height is padded by the 241-ft. (74 m) spires that adorn their tops. (sources:http://time.com)

okay so its the tallest Twin Towers after all.. so what?

One thing you should never missed (must do!!) is to visit the Skybridge on the 41st floor and the Viewing Deck for the magnificent view of the city's skyline!

And there are also several places nearby that you should visit such as the Aquaria KLCC, the Central Market, and BBKLCC. (Will write on these places some other times in the future)

owh, and not to forget the admission ticket for adult is Rm80 and child is RM30.
